...bitter at all; in fact, they're downright enthused. The local tourist bureau hosted a massive Office convention last October that officials said drew more than 10,000 fans of the show to this city of about 75,000; the Today Show's Al Roker gave the weather report direct from the University of Scranton during the event. The bureau has just launched an official Office tour, featuring Poor Richard's Pub and other locations mentioned in the show. "It is still amazing to me how much press this has generated for us," says Tracy Barone, executive director...
...just part of Rove's carefully calibrated public second act. It's also about reputation. After a 15-year run as George W. Bush's resident campaign genius, Rove left the White House diminished by accusations he played a role in politicized hiring at the Justice Department. (An internal report on the matter is expected soon.) He was wounded, too, by the revelation that - despite numerous, vigorous denials by the Administration - he indeed leaked the identity of CIA officer Valerie Plame. The University of Maine at Farmington went trayless in February 2007, reporting an overall reduction in food waste of 65,000 pounds and 288,288 gallons of water conserved. Meanwhile, Georgia Tech - which implemented a no-tray program...
Some schools are already ahead of the pack. The NWF report doesn't rank universities by greenness, but it does highlight over 200 of the best performers. Michigan State University got high marks for increasing the number of sustainability courses it offered fivefold since 2000. The University of Colorado, Boulder, has an Environmental Center that employs eight full-time professors and serves more than 100 students. The center provides both interdisciplinary environmental studies, and helps plan the greening of the university. Then there's the College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, Maine, which offers just one major: human ecology...
