More serious trouble was presented by the Treasury's attempt to repossess Government property on the south side of Pennsylvania Avenue, three blocks west of the Capitol. Wholesale warehouses, a cheap hotel, automobile showrooms, a Chinese restaurant and an undertaking shop occupied the row of old ugly brick buildings on this site. The U. S. had bought up the land as part of its plan to beautify the Federal City (TIME. May 6, 1929). The plot was to be converted into a park.
