Whatever happened to the days when parents were allowed to exercise whatever disciplinary measures they deemed necessary on their children, when the situation warranted it? Parents were allowed to reprimand their children when vulgar language was directed at them or when their behavior was out of control. Thirty, 40, and 50 years ago, children were better behaved and had a healthier respect for their parents. Most of the children grew up and became responsible citizens. History shows that the youths of today are committing more violent crimes at a younger age than they did 30, 40 and 50 years...
...guardians of free speech when we need them? For the most part, they are off in the sunny glades of academe, defending professors against the slightest infringement of their presumed right to say anything, at any volume, to anyone. Last fall, for example, history professor Jay Bergman was reprimanded by his employer, Central Connecticut State University, for screaming at a student he found tearing down a flyer he had posted. That resulted in millions of dollars wasted to alter military operations in response to false information. While former CIA chief Robert Gates has denied reports that CIA Director John Deutch is planning to reprimand some 12 past and present CIA directors, TIME's Doug Waller predicts congressional leaders won't hesitate to take up the slack. Says Waller: "We'll likely see demands from Republicans and Democrats alike for greater accountability by the specific individuals who have been party to this mess...
