...Captain. Lake Powell, a 186-mile-long reservoir in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, spans the border of Utah and Arizona and offers fishing, beaches and dramatic views of the red rocks. The major activity here, of course, is boating. The Great Lake Powell Water Adventure gets you two nights' lodging for two (either at a hotel or an RV/campground), breakfast and full-day use of a 19-foot power boat to explore canyons and alcoves. Rates start at $515 for two nights, through October 31. If you'd prefer to leave the skippering to someone else, try the Rainbow...
...cause of the earthquake parents has proven different. Not only do the parents continue to have a vast reservoir of sympathy from ordinary Chinese for their plight, they also have Ai Weiwei, an unusual champion whose determination not to let the issue be buried under bureaucratic obfuscations and strong-arming is - if anything - even greater than their own. On May 5, having steadfastly refused to do so for the past year, authorities released an estimate that 5,335 students died in the quake - a concession that was widely viewed as being forced by Ai's unrelenting campaign and the work...
...sure that the A/H1N1 virus actually originated in pigs. There's been no evidence yet of pigs getting sick in either Mexico or the U.S. (Despite several countries' bans on pork imports, it's important to remember that the disease cannot be contracted by eating pork.) The original reservoir for flu viruses is actually wild birds, which can spread infection to domestic birds and people - as we saw with the H5N1 avian flu in Asia - and to pigs. Pigs make particularly good biological mixing bowls since they can be infected by bird-, swine- and human-flu viruses and provide...
About five million people, or a quarter of the population of Mexico City's urban sprawl, woke up Thursday with dry taps. The drought was caused by the biggest stoppage in the city's main reservoir system in recent years to ration its depleting supplies. Government officials hope this and four other stoppages will keep water flowing until the summer rainy season fills the basins back up. But they warn that the Mexican capital needs to seriously overhaul its water system to stop an unfathomable disaster in the future. (See pictures of the world water crisis...
...Today, the KIO is waging an information campaign on a series of seven planned dams in Kachin, which will flood hundreds of villages and could threaten many others because the region's frequent seismic activity could trigger reservoir floods. (Two previously built dams in Kachin were rendered useless after breaking, and nearby villagers, who never received any electricity, were killed by the rush of water.) The dams, which are slated to generate seven times Burma's entire current electricity capacity, are being jointly developed by state-owned Chinese companies and a Burmese firm, Asia World, whose managing director...
