...possessing Africans, Asians, Latin Americans and, most favored of all, Arabs, who provided two-thirds of the petroleum exports and have more than three-fifths of the proven petroleum reserves in the non-Communist world. One bleak, sparsely populated country is by far the world's greatest seller and reservoir of oil, and one dour, ascetic and shrewd man is its undisputed ruler...
...energy that heats the homes of the Paris suburb of Melun (pop. 42,000) comes from a highly unusual source: a natural underground reservoir of hot brackish water located more than a mile underneath the town. French engineers boast that the system for tapping geothermal energy is the first of its kind. What makes it unique, they say, is the fact that the water is piped back into the ground for reheating, which means that Melun's subterranean furnace could keep working almost indefinitely...
Melun's underground reservoir contains hot (about 160° F.) but not boiling water. To get at it, French Engineer Pierre Maugis, 65, drilled a 5,850-ft. hole, which allows the water to escape to the surface. There, it is passed through a radiator-like device called a heat exchanger, which heats water from the city's regular water supply. The temperature of the city water is raised from about 50° F. to 149° F., hot enough to use in bathtubs or sinks filled with dirty dishes. The water is also sent through floor pipes...
...some modest local fame as an oil region for decades. Now it has suddenly become the center of the most exciting mystery story in world petroleum. By drilling deeper than ever before-as far as three miles into the geological subbasement-Mexican engineers have found a much bigger reservoir of oil than anyone had suspected was there, a subterranean lake of petroleum three or four miles wide and perhaps up to 30 miles long...
...zeroing in on his support of forced school busing and his opposition to the Alaska pipeline--two positions which many of the Indiana constituency do not share. In the past, Bayh has also been an advocate of gun control and a major opponent of a proposed new Indianapolis area reservoir for water supply--actions which have stirred up some voter opposition...
