Certainly Wilbur Mills was very wide of the mark last month in predicting that Nixon would be forced to resign when his tax liabilities were revealed. Opinion on the President, as judged by polls, has been pretty firmly set for some time, at least at the extremes. Thus the tax charges generated considerable sympathy among his hard-core supporters, while those convinced that the President must go took the tax denouement as additional confirmation of their opinion.
