There are small sculptures at Marlborough, Abakanowicz's hallmark figures, molded from resin-stiffened burlap. Headless and repetitious, they look "expressionist" but aren't: their true ancestors are ancient kouroi and Egyptian scribes planted on their plinths. It is amazing to see how much inward dignity Abakanowicz can give to a human figure made of cloth, and how many subtle variations she can infuse into a whole row of them. They are funereal: the wrinkled burlap reminds you of mummified skin. When Abakanowicz lines up 10, 20 or 30 more or less identical figures, as in Infantes, 1992, you think...
...from the Neolithic period found in the whole world," Egg marvels. Its cargo of feathered arrows marks another first. Carved from viburnum and dogwood branches, a dozen of them were unfinished. But two were primed for shooting -- with flint points and feathers. The feathers had been affixed with a resin-like glue at an angle that would cause spin in flight and help maintain a true course. "It is significant that ballistic principles were known and applied," says Notdurfter. The quiver also held an untreated sinew that could be made into a bowstring; a ball of fibrous cord; the thorn...
...Pont Co. produces an acetal resin used to make the Seattle Foot, a flexible, lifelike prosthesis. Among well-satisfied customers is Bill Demby, a former high school basketball player who had both legs amputated below the knee after being caught in a rocket attack in Vietnam. In a widely broadcast Du Pont TV commercial, Demby is shown taking a jump shot in a school-yard game...
...Coast petrochemical strip from Texas to Louisiana. Last October, 23 employees died and 130 were injured when explosions sent 100-ft. walls of flame through a Phillips Petroleum plastics plant in nearby Pasadena. At the same plant on June 8, eight workers were hospitalized after a fire in a resin-producing unit. That same day explosions severely damaged the 886-ft. oil tanker Mega Borg, spewing a 30-mile-long slick off the Texas coast. Early last week traffic was halted on the busy Houston ship channel while firemen struggled to contain a roaring oil fire that shot flames more...
...solid "disk" wheels made of Kevlar improved matters but were somewhat hard to control in crosswinds. A solution came early this year from Specialized Bicycle Components of Morgan Hill, Calif.: a three-spoke wheel developed with Du Pont. Specialized's wheel, a composite of carbon fiber, epoxy resin, Kevlar and aluminum, has an air-foil shape, and was designed with a Cray supercomputer. Tests proved the wheels are faster and more durable than traditional ones...
