Jones is not the only black choreographer to resist the aesthetic dominance of the late, great Alvin Ailey, whose masterworks were mostly composed to black music and whose themes were rooted in African-American history. The austere, abstract work of Ralph Lemon, 42, for example, owes a clear visual debt to such white Post-modern experimentalists as Meredith Monk and Trisha Brown. With their sense of order and symmetry, Lemon's dances even resemble the plotless ballets of George Balanchine, in spirit if not vocabulary. When a friend in Denver challenged Lemon to create a piece with a black theme...
With so much pressure to do a little song and dance, even the judge cannot resist being drawn into the spotlight. The Times reported that Judge Lance Ito has been trying out some of his new improv stuff on all the new publicity he's been getting. In his latest bon mot to potential jurors, the judge suggested that they "distract themselves from O.J. news by watching "The Simpsons'--the TV show, I mean." He probably shouldn't quit his day job. He should also realize that there are two TV shows by that name, and that he stars...
...thousands of Haitians who flocked to Port-au-Prince airport last Monday afternoon had come to cheer, applaud or just stare at the newly arrived U.S. troops. Once there, they could not resist the exhilarating urge to shout their joy at the imminent return of the man whose name could not be spoken and whose picture could not be displayed for the past three years. "Vive Titid!" they cried, invoking their affectionate sobriquet for exiled President Jean- Bertrand Aristide. "Down with Cedras!" Suddenly, two Haitian army officers appeared, dragging a skinny young man who was moaning pitifully. His face...
Throughout the movie, Stone cannot resist indulging his overt, slap-in-the-face style. Has this man never heard of subtlety? One of the many instances occurs when Mickey comes to save Mallory. The entire episode is packaged as a sitcom fully equipped with fake, plastic decor creating a surreal aura reinforced by track laughter. This seems acceptable enough. Yet Stone takes what could have been a clever idea and pretentiously exploits it beyond meaning. The modern-day knight arrives enrobed in his bloody butcher shop apron carrying 50 pounds of raw meat. His scantily-clad damsel in distress comes...
...raise taxes again, or both. Vermont Governor Howard Dean, chairman of the National Governors Association, thinks momentarily flush states should put money into contingency funds to cushion the effects of the inevitable next slowdown. "But the legislators can't keep their hands off," he laments. His legislature, against liberal resistance, brought taxes back down to pre-1991 levels, forcing Dean to "cut ((spending on)) all kinds of things from education to welfare" -- an indication of how difficult tax-cut pressure is to resist...
