Bate has ignored none of these peculiarities, but what fascinates him is Johnson's temperament. By "storming the main gate of experience," Bate writes in a typically vigorous formulation, Johnson managed to resist his own failings and acquire mastery over "the dark, bewildered prison house of the isolated subjective self." His life was a series of afflictions: childhood illnesses that left him half deaf and half blind, recurrent episodes of near insanity, a career at Oxford that ended after a year because he could no longer afford the tuition, marriage to a woman 20 years his senior who died...
Casting Diane Keaton in the role of Dunn has proved to be a wise move by Brooks. Her past appearances in various Woody Allen films have left American audiences with a very tangible image of the actress: an often capricious yet charming woman who generally musters the strength to resist the prodigal nebbish's amorous advances. Keaton has tackled a character in Looking for Mr. Goodbar who is virtually an antithesis of her previous roles. Her Theresa Dunn is a willing woman, to put it charitably, a closet nympho who repeatedly allows herself to be sacrificed to the discredited altar...
...lifetime of power. "He has crippled the opposition political parties, punished the exercise of free speech, prevented free association, censored the media, curbed the courts, subdued the universities, restricted religious groups, controlled labor movements and generally created an atmosphere of fear and intimidation. Reading about the Newfoundland that "bounded out of the water and sprayed everyone," I cannot resist passing along the story of the breeder who perfected the ideal dog. To retrieve, the canine was trained to walk on water. A prospective buyer, after seeing the dog's remarkable performance, was unimpressed. "Don't you notice anything unusual about that dog?" asked the trainer. "Yep," quipped the observer. "Looks like he can't swim...
...from this year's usual film fare, but the protagonists' quirky personalities are only part of the story. Odd-couple films are nothing new to American audiences, and--if one can hazard any generalizations about such movies--they tend to have a built-in pitfall. Few directors can resist the temptation to dwell on the most obvious differences between the two principals and milk every embarassed chuckle and nervous giggle out of the gag. This is acceptable for the first 15 minutes or so, but the jokes wear mercilessly thin after a while, and crass exploitation soon rears its ugly...
