Home again. I enter the dining hall. By this time, many of my friends already know about my experiment, but I still receive curious glances from the staff. Again, I am impressed by the silence, and respect that the silence implied. Nobody asks me why I'm dressed the way I am, except for the polite query, "Is it a special holiday today?" Surely, tourists who travel abroad want to respect and value the people in the lands they visit. Thus the endless debates over "Asian values," democracy and the value of constructive engagement should ring hollow when compared with the simple, sincerely expressed wishes of the Burmese: they do not want tourists as long as tourism undermines their democratic aspirations. And with the current level of military control over the burgeoning tourist trade, visitors to Burma cannot but hurt the people and land they are visiting. Such a weak punishment following a protracted investigation in which the six students continued to harass their classmates is completely unacceptable. Not only does the procedure show a lack of respect for student and Faculty complaints of sexual harassment--a lapse that could have repercussions from federal employment regulators; the light punishment also serves to condone the behavior. For a school with a student body that is 70 percent male and thus desperate to increase the number of female applicants, this decision is as unwise as it is unjust...
