How do you respond to the criticism that some people charged with filling it out may not have direct experience with the schools they're rating, so they may just be going on rumors? I think there is a small group of schools, mainly in the liberal-arts category, that have strong feelings about the reputation survey. Generally speaking, our response rate did tick up a little bit this year - it went to 48% from 46% - so there's some indication that this boycott [among schools that are refusing to fill out the reputation survey...

Bruno Piccinelli, head of UCIS, Italy's association of rescue-dog trainers, says the breeds, which are innately strong in the water, are trained from puppyhood until they are at least two years old to make water rescues. Dogs have long been taught to respond to specific types of water accidents and other emergencies as well as to use their keen hearing and sense of smell to assist in search-and-rescue missions - canines were used to help find survivors in the rubble of the recent earthquake in L'Aquila, for example. But now some 70 pooches have been authorized...

The National Rifle Association, whose website encourages its members to attend and speak up at congressional town-hall meetings, didn't respond to a request for comment on protesters' brandishing guns. But Paul Helmke, who heads the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, says such an act "endangers all in attendance" and that even if their actions are legal, "common sense" should dictate that gun owners keep their weapons away from such gatherings...
