Jaguar spent no less effort improving the six-speed transmission. There are three modes: automatic, sport and manual (using the shift paddles). In manual, according to Jaguar, the gears respond to the driver's touch in 600 milliseconds, and the sensation is pure greased lightning. Sport mode feels silky smooth too. Overall, the car isn't as lithe or fun to drive as a Porsche 911 with a manual stick shift. But Jaguar has concluded that its core market is drivers who want a balance of performance and luxury, and in that respect the XKR hits its mark...

...prescribed, the furor over "Iranscam" barely abated. When Reagan's departed National Security Adviser John Poindexter and his renegade deputy Lieut. Colonel Oliver North appeared before a Senate committee, both invoked the Fifth Amendment. Robert McFarlane, Poindexter's predecessor and an early promoter of establishing contacts with Iran, did respond to Senate interrogators, but he cast doubt on Reagan's claims about what the President knew and when he knew it. As a flood of disclosures about North's secret arms network fueled fascination with details of the bizarre affair, Congressmen intensified calls for the heads of others...

When I launched our campaign for the local elections on the slogan of Vote Blue, Go Green, I'm sure some people thought this was completely mad, but the fact is that the environment does matter to people and they do recognize its importance and they respond to the arguments we're putting out about...

There is no doubt that Barack Obama can appeal to white audiences -witness the huge crowds of people the Presidential contender has drawn in Iowa and New Hampshire, or his best-selling book. But one of the many unknowns about Obama is how black activists and voters will respond to a different kind of candidacy for an African-American hopeful. Jesse Jackson's focus on the underclass and poverty didn't win him the Democratic nomination in 1988, but Obama would surely like to win the 90% of the black vote in most states that Jackson...

...Undergraduate Education (CUE) evaluations of our courses. But apparently the deluge of spam, combined with all the other incentives FAS dreamt up (including course instructors’ promising to don fairy costumes on exam day and extra points on the final) have been insufficient in motivating Harvard students to respond. As of Friday, only 50.55 percent of students had completed the evaluations. Harvard has dangled plenty of carrots in its quest to get students to fill out CUE evaluations, but those efforts have not worked. Now, instead of bribes of sugarplums such as extra funding for the House with...
