National Chairman Guy Gabrielson and the rest of the strategy committee endorsed the chairman's words. But two facts stood in the way of translating the words into an undeviating policy. Republican policy in 1950 will be made by the party's congressional leaders who did not attend the Chicago meeting. And few politicians believe that Republicans can recapture the decisive votes of the nation's political independents with a program of indiscriminate opposition...

Hisses and catcalls from the Communist claque in the spectators' gallery drowned out the rest of Kostov's statement. When the din had subsided, Kostov's lawyer apologized for "defending" him, and called for the maximum penalty. A lawyer, he said, should not try to help a guilty client: "In a Socialist state there is no division of duty between the judge, prosecutor and defense counsel." Next day the court found Kostov guilty of treason and sentenced him to the gallows; his ten codefendants, all of whom had pliantly "confessed" and testified against Kostov, got off with...

...present time, the final adoption of these rules will be held up until the FCC finishes talking about color television. When they finally come up for approval, the FCC ought to reconsider its clause on cutting power. The rest of the regulations can eliminate the problem of interference quite nicely, and college radio does not deserve to be short-circuited out of business...
