...indie rock saviors, Olympia's Sleater-Kinney has done something truly amazing with The Hot Rock: they actually made a great record. While the pure reckless power of its predecessor, Dig Me Out, has been turned down a notch. In its place is a new sense of musical restraint and variety. Though they've gained press for one of the leaders of the girl rock movement, don't count on Sleater-Kinney showing up at Lilth Fair anytime soon. The album opens with "Start Together," showcasing Corin Tucker's hair-raising wail over Sleater-Kinney's familiar variety of punk...
...these three men need a carrot at all? If markets work so well, why were they burning their vacations on the phone trying to convince central bankers 10,000 miles away that the world depended on a little self-restraint? The problem, the men say, is that the markets are encumbered by all kinds of imperfections. Even tiny flaws create problems. Black chalk and pastels were used in Head of Potiphar's Wife to create a drawing that anyone could mistake for a painting. Red and black chalk work their magic in Young Woman Holding a Cornucopia; the folds of her robe are so well defined, yet shadowed at the same time, that one must wonder whether the work is a drawing...
...sedate self. From the moment in midspring that Sosa launched a sudden torrent of home runs like none ever seen in baseball history--he hit 20 in June alone--the two men were flawlessly scripted antagonists cast in the same play. This was rapture vs. gravity, spontaneity vs. self-restraint, Latin brio vs. California cool. Their collision seemed inevitable; yet what ensued was less a crash than a hug. The two men cheered each other on, praised each other's skills, slapped hands, dissipated the heat. They became allies in this drama, united against the two-digit foe that...
