...problem facing the Justices was that laws aimed at the content of pornography inevitably restrict expression, and the repellent and the worthwhile can be so closely braided that no amount of linguistic hairsplitting can untangle them. Drafted with the assistance of MacKinnon and Dworkin, the Indianapolis ordinance targeted materials that showed women in bondage or that treated pain and humiliation as sexual turn-ons. But more sweepingly, it forbade showing women "as sexual objects for domination, conquest, violation, exploitation, possession or use." A federal appeals court was concerned that the ordinance might encompass everything from the ! Iliad to Barbarella...
...primary causes of all this talk are classes that continue with papers and exams well into reading period. There is no reason to believe that the people who teach these classes will not simply extend the work into the "buffer period" of two days despite efforts to restrict work during that period. As Mr. Barron and Mr. Saal pointed out, reading period was "originally set aside...as lecture-free time." With PACs pouring $5000 check after $5000 check into the coffers of committee members, it's difficult to imagine a fair, loopholefree tax plan emerging from Congress...
Many in Leverett House want to restrict the use of our vents to "our" bum. This is to me a disgusting thought. Leverett students should not be interested in finding an unfortunate human being to patronize as their pet. This man is not our pet; he should be treated to proper care in a proper shelter. "Concerned" students who want him to stay on a hot air vent are misplacing their concern. The Leverett House vents are not--nor were they ever meant to be--proper shelters, and students should not encourage other human beings to live there...
