Sales increases over the 1976 Christmas season ranged from 8% to as much as 30% in some areas. The Commerce Department last week reported that retail sales, excluding autos, were 12% higher than a year earlier in the four weeks ending on Christmas Eve; in the final week the gain was 16%.
