Swings? Slides? How hopelessly retro. Nowadays, if a kid waits till she's 10 to decide she wants to compete at an advanced level, the travel team will have already left the station. Her peers will be making deft one-touch passes while she's still learning to dribble. That leaves as her only option the easygoing recreation league, where the coaching is desultory and players often go AWOL. ...clever bag of goodies to keep the peace. About a month before our trip, she begins collecting small toys and games--a deck of cards here, a cache of toy soldiers there--and wraps them as presents to dole out whenever backseat warfare appears imminent. We're going retro this year with Viewmaster reels, portable Parchesi, Mr. Potato Head and other childhood relics that our digitized kids find oddly intriguing...

The generation that not long ago pushed Gregorian chant into the Top 40 may now plant it back into the Mass. Since 1990, the number of U.S. Catholic dioceses allowing traditional Masses (in Latin or a mix of English and Latin) has leaped from six to 131--70% of the total. More than 150,000 people attend them each week...

Deconstruction everywhere. Retro is getting tired. Until they start making ice cream flavors in Postmodern Pistachio Pastiche, this headlong rush to reassemble everything from its self-conscious rubble can still be stomached. Put postmodernism in your mouth and you'll find it's indigestible. Thankfully, and refreshingly, kitsch-pop masters Pizzicato Five can still render postmodernism an enjoyably tasteful joy ride. They trip through safe and smiley TV-land in a jalopy heap slapped together from '60s and jap pop, hip hop beats, funk threads, classical samples, bossa nova riffs and exotica, running on smooth easy-listening gas. Maki Nomiya...
