...paranoid modernity but misses, venturing off into the surreal as it ticks through comedy, romance, tragedy and documentary. The aesthetic attempts to depict low-class L.A. kitsch (the 1954 sushi joint, Tommy's family home in the outer 'burbs), but lacks many key touches. Especially lacking is the cool, retro music soundtrack one would associate with such a picture--the orchestral back up tunes whine of missed-opportunity. What is strangest is that in spite of all of this, The Alarmist turns out to be a very entertaining movie. Though one is left feeling incredulous by the turn of events...

...syncopated keyboard touches that the song was actually about wretched abjection, the ways we degrade ourselves for love. Lead singer Nina Persson might have sounded impossibly glamorous, but she was still "cry[ing], pray[ing] and beg[ging]" as a pathetic, deflated masochist. Far from the weightless retro nugget it resembled, "Lovefool" used its radiant hooks to the most perverse of aims, like a tootsie roll pop with an acid core. ...wasn't just Perth, or the momentary slip ?- this 77-year-old has been getting retro with the whole trip. "Zero-g and I feel fine," said Glenn -- then and now -- when mission control wanted to know how he was adjusting to microgravity. Not to mention the "godspeed" references uttered ad nauseam Thursday, or the fact that when the shuttle flight passed the mark of Glenn?s previous extraterrestrial excursion ?- four hours, 55 minutes and 23 seconds ?- it was conspicuously pored over. Now that the aged astronaut is in uncharted territory, however, the nostalgia trip has nowhere left...

Friday night's show, entitled "Fashion Absolutely Boston," featured saggy models clothed in retro 80s suits, berets, taffeta boxers and slashed dresses. While many local art and design school students got an opportunity to demonstrate their imaginative designs at the show, their clothes were overwhelmed by Jamin 94.5's boisterous deejay and the atrocious decor of Avalon. The bright sequined dresses, disco-ball suit jackets and the polyester oriental carpet capes of "Fashion Absolutely Boston" were more reminiscent of Fabio and Bobby Brown than the latest from Versace and Marc Jocobs...
