Although it can hardly be said to have pushed blues rock, country rock or good old rhythm and blues into the background, classical rock's success has been an immense surprise to the U.S. record industry, which has yet to produce an American model. In retrospect, the movement could have been seen coming years ago: from the Beatles' use of a string quartet in Yesterday (1965) to The Who's so-called rock opera Tommy...

Though they plead innocent to any bias toward either Turkey or Greece, even Washington officials admit in retrospect to some blunders in the Cyprus affair. Others credit them with even more. The first mistake was not taking sufficiently seriously reports in May that the Athens dictatorship was going to move against Makarios. The State Department sent a warning to Ioannides while Kissinger and former President Nixon were in Moscow in June, and it thought that the message had been taken to heart and the anti-Makarios movement dropped. The fears of these Senators were never stated publicly - and in retrospect they seemed un founded. Yet one of them declared: "Well, I read this morning about the North Vietnamese getting close to Danang and I was concerned about what he might...

...Brando's archetypal motorcycle movie about alienation on two wheels, is playing at the Welles this week with Jimmy Cagney's Yankee Doodle Dandy. The Brando is pretty much of a period piece that's only any good because of its star and because of what it says in retrospect about the 50s. The Cagney film, on the other hand, is the greatest musical biography ever made. Cagney can't sing to save his life, but he sure can boogie. The patriotic clap-trap that fills the footage can go, but the George M. Cohan songs should stick around forever...
