Some high school newspaper staffs argued fiercely over the ad; business managers feared that the subject matter would scare away other advertisers, or potential advertisers. Our staff ended up running the ad. Again, I believe it was the right decision; but in retrospect, I'm not sure we made it for the right reasons. I recall arguing at the time that "they sent us the money, so we'll print the ad." I now realize it's a lot more complicated than that...
ENCOUNTERS WITH ANGELS. Maybe it is not surprising that people who believe they have had an encounter with angels are among the most reluctant to discuss them. Yet there is an uncanny similarity in the stories and a moving conviction behind them. Very often the recognition comes only in retrospect. A person is in immediate danger -- the car stalled in the deadly snowstorm, the small plane lost in the fog, the swimmer too far from shore. And emerging from the moment's desperation comes some logical form of rescue: a tow-truck driver, a voice from the radio tower...
...unemployed, and said, "O.K., but if you're not good I won't let you stay here." "But," Nick Bhakta recalls, "he was good. Every day he did not stay in the room. He came only in the nighttime." Bhakta charged $35 a night; Ferguson stayed three weeks. In retrospect, all he really needed was 15 days -- the time it took to clear his application to buy the 9-mm Ruger semiautomatic handgun he used last week on a rush-hour commuter train in New York...
...Clintons' turn. In refurbishing the Treaty Room and Lincoln Sitting Room on the executive mansion's second floor, the Clintons, avid history buffs, sought to replicate the style of Lincoln's era -- in retrospect, a risky choice. Mid-19th century American decor was in its, shall we say, bawdy-house phase at the time. The Victorians never met a swag or tassel they didn't like; if one patterned fabric was good, surely four would be better...
...performances are also something to see. When the film came out, the performances were a point of contention, called naturalistic by some and grotesque by others. In retrospect we can see that they were not influenced by kabuki, as so many facilely claimed, but, rather, by silent films, which Kurosawa greatly admired. Toshiro Mifune's feral performance as the bandit is legendary, and Machiko Kyo brings off the task of presenting what are in reality four different women. Masayuki Mori as the husband is excellent; his serpent-like look of contempt is unforgettable. Takashi Shimura as the woodcutter...
