...accompanied by a newly married, recently arrived couple, Nick (Ralph Redpath) and his wife Honey (Joy Bond). In the ill-defined hours of early morning, the four play out a series of nightmarish games of confrontation. The cob web illusions that cling to the consciousness are torn away to reveal ugly truths long hidden...
...burning the fetus to death. The saline solution, usually used after the twelfth week, is comparable to napalm in its effect on fetal skin tissue (and on the fetus' internal tissues, because the fetus drinks the amniotic fluid). Almost all abortions occur after the sixth week of pregnancy. Electroencepholographs reveal a fetal brainwave pattern at 42 days, and this date probably represents the current limit of EEG technology, not the beginning of brain activity...

As members of this special committee each inadvertently reveal pairs of panties pulled from back pockets and briefcases, you start wondering what has happened to Stoppard's proverbial cleverness. In Jumpers he used stage acrobatics to poke fun at and illuminate complicated philosophical questions; here he finds no better use for age-old sight gags than to keep his audience interested between long recitations of names of English inns...

The opening of The Marriage of Maria Braun is a particular gem: as our eyes take in an Adolf Hitler wall poster, the image explodes to reveal a full-dress wedding in the midst of a bombing attack. From this incongruous tableau, the director moves on to ever higher lunacy. Audiences never know when he will cut away from a tense dramatic exchange to a closeup of a pack of Camels...
