Sometimes menacing, often bleakly comic, always alarmingly precognitive, the visions of Writer Gerard Reve (Jeroen Krabbé) have their cinematic possibilities. The trouble is his movie is mostly banal, the stuff of arrested adolescence. It contains obsessively recurring images: woman as spider, devouring her mate once she has lured him to sexual consummation; woman as elusive Madonna, offering salvation to wayward boys if only they can catch her attention; campy sacrilege committed on Catholic iconography gloomy reflections on the artist's unhappy lot in a staid bourgeois society, with particular reference to Holland, where the audience is uneconomically small...
...really half full? In a time of uncertainty, it is possible to give the Government the benefit of the doubt, just as any citizen customarily gives the same benefit to himself. After all, as the saying goes, nothing is certain except death and taxes. Or rather depopulation and reve nue enhancement...
Lastly, Moye pays tribute to our century's greatest cellist by filling out the disk with three short works associated with Casals: the Siloti transcription of the second movement from Bach's organ Toccata, Adagio and Fugue, and Casals' own arrangement of the ever-lovely Faure song "Apres un reve," both of which demonstrate Moye's marvelous legato bowing; and the dashing encore piece Requiebros that was written for and dedicated to Casals by his one-time student Gasparo Cassado...
