FORD'S DRAMATIC vision is simultaneously forthright and elusive, and the interest of these introductory notes is only to mention two characteristics which permeate all his films. First, Ford is a master at the sudden juxtaposition of emotional quantities. Serious scenes will turn into comic ones, then revert suddenly to introspection. The greatness of this is that Ford carries the audience with him totally; we are rarely conscious of these shifts and instead experience them without question or intellectual judgment. In Donovan's Reef (1963)--a good film for examining this--the mood of each scene in the second half...
...Gaulle may have led the opposition to excessive American influence on Western Europe, but he was not alone among Europeans in his objections. Given the enormous Western European advances in prosperity and stability since he came to power in 1958, there is no prospect that Europe will now revert to a position of dependence on and subservience to the U.S. such as prevailed 15 and 20 years ago. Yara has no illusions, however, about the problems that fukki...

Many cases indicate that while a man's potency can be dramatically stimulated for a few months by an affair with a younger woman, he will usually revert to the same pattern he had maintained with his coeval wife. According to Sociologist Clark Vincent, on the other hand, there is more likelihood of serious differences in sexual appetite among coevals than among May-December couples. Vincent's theory, however, has yet to be verified...
...Chair-man Lin Piao, were reported to have made important speeches. The most immediate problem, according to the committee communique, is the job of "party consolidation and party building." The faithful Maoist press warned that this vital task cannot be left only to present party members-who might simply revert to the policies of Liu Shao-chi. Instead, new party members must come from the outside, primarily from "advanced elements among the industrial workers," while only tried and true Maoists among the party members are to be promoted...
