...mechanics of his biography, be first sketches the life of Gandhi till the beginning of his leadership, of the peaceful revolt of India in 1920. Then he outlines his teachings. It would seem that he had said most of what was to be said. But this, Part I, is the least interesting of the three parts. In the second he describes the political, religious, and spiritual events of the first year of the revolt. The actual events are only sketched--the rest is the story of the man, and a people and a religion. Then Mr. Rolland gathers together...

...Liberalism is not a matter of protest, or revolt and defiance," said Rabbi Stephen S. Wise in an address at the Liberal Club yesterday. "It is, rather, the search for truth with a free mind, and with a spirit of humility arising from faith in one's self, in human-kind, and in the verities of human progress. Venizelos' father was a merchant and desired him to adopt a commercial career. He was sent to Athens to study law. Some years after, he headed a revolt in Crete against the Turks which was entirely successful. The Turks offered autonomy for Canea, but Venizelos refused, desiring union not of the town of Canea, but of all the island of Crete with Greece. His attitude caused a riot in which he was nearly stabbed. At night when he was asleep his house was set on fire, but he succeeded in escaping...
