...these reports added up to little more than propaganda. There was no authentic evidence of revolt in Germany last week, or even of the desire to revolt. Life had merely become harder. In Berlin, where last fortnight crowds appeared stunned and silent, the crowds had disappeared. The people were too busy to stand in crowds. Women were beginning to run trams and busses as men went to the front (during a blackout two streetcars crashed headon, injuring ten passengers). Women sold newspapers and delivered mail. ...Another sore minority in Poland are the 4,500,000 Ukrainians in the South East. As recently as last April young Polish roughs were beating Ukrainian ringleaders with sticks and iron bars, wrecking their shops and buildings, on the grounds that, plotting revolt, they had hid munitions in churches, machine guns in homes. The two great organs of Anglo-Saxon democracy imitated each other in the same sense that a blotter carries a reverse image of the signature it blots...
...Home. In 1919 General Gamelin headed the French military mission to Brazil, a job requiring the greatest tact since the old German pre-War influence in the Brazilian Army was still strong. In 1925 he was recalled and soon sent to Syria to help put down the Druse revolt, a suppression which he later succeeded in accomplishing alone with considerable bloodshed on the part of the Druses. He was on hand when French planes and artillery wiped out 1,456 civilians in the native quarters of Damascus, thus proving that Maurice Gamelin had no particular interest in inflicting minimum losses...
