Listeners-in on the Rev. Charles Edward Coughlin's radio program last Sunday heard as pompous and ominous a whoop-de-do as ever came out of Royal Oak, Mich. The hour began, as usual, with soft religious music. Then, instead of the accustomed rabble-rousing baritone, came the voice of an announcer urging listeners to tell their friends to tune in. More music. Then the announcer, in almost a fall-of-Warsaw manner: "I am instructed to say: Father Coughlin will not address you today." Again music, followed by: "I am instructed to say: Pay no heed...
...Council for Democracy.* Among them were such innocuous clergymen as Episcopal Bishop Beverley D. Tucker of Ohio, such unsubversive characters as Methodist Bishop Francis John McConnell of New York, Dr. Reinhold Niebuhr of Union Theological Seminary (chairman of the Council)-and a couple of sure-enough fellow travelers, Methodist Rev. Dr. Harry Frederick Ward and Episcopalian Rev. William Benjamin ("Bill") Spofford. One William Ball, leader of Cleveland's Young Americanist League, fee-fi-fo-fummed for the G-Men to investigate this "Red Christian Front." An officious "Director of Americanism" of the American Legion announced: "What we want...
...Piccadilly provost marshal remanded to Bow Street one Rev. Maurice Kenal Exham, 71, former Dorset vicar, for "wearing a military uniform calculated falsely to suggest that he was an Army captain." Quick was the vicar to explain: 1) the family of his 12th-Century ancestor, Sir Richard Exham, had been granted the right to wear military uniform "in perpetuity" by Henry II for aid in the Irish troubles; 2) the right had never been abrogated...
Refreshingly different was the approach to the war offered yesterday morning in the Chapel by the Rev. Dr. John Haynes Holmes. Most of the traditional views, in his hands, went by the board. The attitude that it is a black and white war, he can understand; but he had no patience with it. It is unrealistic. The pacifist view that war is abominable in and of itself, he also can understand; and with this he has more sympathy. The attitude of peace-at-any-price for America, he can neither understand nor tolerate. His conclusion: peace...
Germany's Rev. Martin Niemöller was immured nearly two years ago in Sachsenhausen concentration camp for his leadership of un-Nazified Confessional pastors. Pastor Niemöller, who was a U-boat commander in World War I, offered the Fatherland his services in World War II (TIME, Oct. 2). His offer was refused. Last week Pastor Niemöller's second offer to fight was rejected, by Grand Admiral Erich Raeder himself...
