...week, with the coming of September, the hotels and pensions, camp grounds and cellars are emptying as tourists make their exhausted way north to factory and office. French railroads put on extra trains; airlines had to refuse tearful pleas. Route Nationale No. 7, which loops its way up the Rhone Valley to Paris, was bumper to bumper with homeward-bound cars. Many tourists swore they would never return, but might well change their minds by next summer, especially if they listen to the men of vision on the Riviera who are talking excitedly of building artificial islands...
...edition (circulation about 8,000), printed in Amsterdam, reaches readers a full day or more after the Trib. "Le New York," as the French fondly call it, is more than a daily paper-it is a European institution, like the Flea Market and the Bourse, the Rhine and the Rhone...
Arriving at Geneva's Hotel du Rhone as one of a U.S. congressional delegation to the atoms-for-peace conference (see SCIENCE), New York's Representative Ludwig Teller checked in minutes after Physicist Edward Teller-developer of the hydrogen bomb and no kin to Ludwig -checked out. ...murders, and how a couple of suicides ended the whole bloody business. The movie plucks the story from the hands of fate and throws it into the lap of chance. It moves the locale from the Left Bank of the Seine to the wrong side of the Rhone, where an impassioned Lyonnaise beauty (Simone Signoret), bored with an inadequate husband, meets "un homme, un vrai" in the form of an Italian truck driver (Raf Vallone). The lovers do not plot the husband's death, but they kill him anyway. After that, accidents keep following each other...
