...poem, titled Rhyme Prose on Literature by Wen Fu and translated by Achilles Fang, describes the feelings of a poet when he creates. In spite of the loss of rhyme, and perhaps meaning as well, through translation, the imagery is fresh and at times brilliant. Mr. Fu has made a careful, thorough exploration of his subject and has conveyed the experiences of his art in a clear, unfaltering manner...

Modernizer Coghill was too much of a poet to follow the patchwork method, i.e., simply to insert modern words where the old ones are unintelligible. ...good ruler, a devoted foreign adviser, and enough oil royalties to work with. The five-island archipelago produces only one-thirtieth of Saudi Arabia's crude, has one-fortieth of Iraq's proven reserves, earns but a fiftieth of Kuwait's royalties. Yet Bahrein (rhyme with ah, rain) is the showplace of the oil kingdoms. Manama, the capital, looks more like a clean town in the West Indies or Bermuda than an Arab town. It has dial phones, running water, sewers, electricity. Mobile DDT sprayers roam over the islands. Malaria has been wiped out, trachoma is disappearing...
