Shifting between full rhythm sections and just bass and drums throughout the album, Turner waxes introspective with the breathy tone and plodding rhythm of the standard "Stardust." The album would be easily dismissible were it not for Turner's flights of interpretational fancy, which soar to great melodic heights yet still maintain the melancholia inherent to many tracks. On "I Loves You Porgy," he conjures simple sentimentality in a lush landscape of tender phrasing and introspective tones. Granted, not every single aspect of Ballad Sessions works. ...despite these ideological problems, the play does resound in its humorous anecdotes and astounding artistic talent. The movement, dancing, rhythm and sheer creativity of the production make it an enjoyable performance to watch regardless of your political scruples. Kudos are due to the direction of Billie Jo Jay '91 and Olivier Besson whose artistic guidance and inspiration are evident throughout the play. Individual monologues glow with talent, especially those of Tara Moon and Sophia Chang '01 whose enthusiasm and energy make the "vagina experience" all the more real. Heavily distorted guitars are on assault on the opening track "Let Me Show You," but are immediately contrasted with ethereal and richly textured multi-layered sonics on the ballad "Possibilities." Radio ready hits jostle for space with heavily funk-influenced grooves, as do rolling rhythm and blues beats, all of which are pulled off with considerable ease considering the great diversity of styles. It's difficult to ascribe credit in this case because we don't know where Hutchence ends and his posthumous producing team begins. Regardless, the work rarely falters, except occasionally...
