Once more the dark round table in Munich's white marble Fiihrerhaus held four pairs of elbows - but the other two belonged to Germany's Foreign Minister Joachim von Ribbentrop and Italy's Foreign Minister Count Galeazzo Ciano. Once more the world waited with bated breath for news of their decision - but that decision meant far more than war or peace in the time of a septuagenarian. This week the men at the round table in Munich intended to settle Europe's destiny until times unforeseeable...

There was the usual British hitch. Forgetting the Oriental sensitivity of Joseph Stalin, forgetting that the British trade mission to Moscow had failed last August largely because it was composed of underlings (while Germany sent Ribbentrop in person), the Government stupidly gave Sir Stafford the minor rank of Special Envoy...

That this help was pre-arranged constituted the burden of Germany's bill of particulars last week against Belgium. Foreign Minister von Ribbentrop extended the accusation to include spying by Belgians to help Britain and France mount an offensive against the Reich's industrial heart in the Rhineland. Not until 8:25 did Foreign Minister Joachim von Ribbentrop come in, pale and red-eyed from a sleepless night. His voice husky from strain, he rasped, "England and France at last dropped the mask. The attack on the Ruhr Valley was definitely planned." Then followed the usual tirade of accusation and denouncement. Belgium and The Netherlands had "plotted" against the Reich, had "fostered a German revolution," etc., etc. Long before he had finished, journalists knew that Germany...
