...this constant combination of white and black that makes the film so rich and beautiful. The slowness of its pacing, odd for a thriller, allows a great complexity of events within each shot. Instead of making points, imposing judgments by cutting between one action and another, Franju juxtaposes them within the same space, allows them to coexist without making a moral judgement. Refusing to simplify, he implies wilder and wilder combinations of good and evil in single figures and single scenes. The world of 1914 is complex, but also very ordered, within his frames. ...Rerum Novarum, published by Leo XIII in 1891, contended that the rich had in effect enslaved the poor, and that every man has a right to a decent wage and reasonable comfort. Pius XI, in Quadragesima Anno (1931), criticized the economic despotism that results from

Never seen out of his black turtleneck (a cop?) and sports car, he is played for a sexy and rich youth-figure who is persecuted by Vaughan, an evil representative of the Rotten Police Structure. Whatever McQueen does, the picture condones. His bumbling unfortunately amounts to virtual murder--to which his reaction are entirely visceral. Godard at least criticizes his terrorists; this one is rewarded, and the audience is expected to love him for his incompetence as much as the film. At its end, after he has managed to kill...
