Detroit: Coleman A. Young, 59, is equally at home wolfing down hot dogs on a ghetto street or dining on filet de boeuf Richelieu with Henry Ford II. An early supporter of Jimmy Carter, Young was rewarded when the President paid him a visit during the campaign. HUD Secretary Patricia Harris and Muhammad Ali also came into the state. Henry Ford II lent his assistance. Young's main opposition was concentrated in the largely white police force, where there is particular resentment against his policy of favoring blacks for city jobs and promotions...
...musketeers (Michael York, Oliver Reed, Richard Chamberlain, Frank Finlay), for example, never stop for a moment to observe - as Lester does - that the French king (Jean Pierre Cassel) for whom they endlessly risk life and limb is a vain and idle popinjay. Their opponents, the servants of Cardinal Richelieu, never seem to notice that their man (deftly played by Charlton Heston) does not seem to be scheming for any useful purpose: his nature simply demands that he spend a certain number of hours each day weaving complicated plots...
Dumas' story has a prodigal range of appeal: the grandeur of the court of Louis XIII; the scandalous romance between his Queen and England's Chief Minister, the Duke of Buckingham; the political intrigues of Cardinal Richelieu; and most of all, the high-flying exploits of young Musketeer-Aspirant D'Artagnan and his three companions as they battle to foil the Cardinal's schemes and thus cover themselves with glory, honor and material reward...

What can you do with a film which manages to make Raquel Welch goofy and charming? How can a movie where Charlton Heston glides around as a hunched Cardinal Richelieu keep anyone scrawling critical notations in the dark? Objecting to Richard Lester's Musketeers for being a little flabby and shallow would be like condemning another of Lester's pictures, A Hard Day's Night, for having the Beatles mouth the words to a dubbed "I Should Have Known Better...
...musketeers-Oliver Reed, Richard Chamberlain, Frank Finlay and Michael York as D'Artagnan-all perform admirably. When the casting threatens to become too capricious (Raquel Welch as the Queen's confidante, Faye Dunaway as the archvillainess, Charlton Heston as Richelieu), Lester exploits the absurdity. He made the discovery, for example, that Welch and Dunaway, for all their physical dissimilarity, are basically the same actress. So a climactic brawl between them is funny not just for itself but because of the two people playing them...
