...fund and private-equity managers receive. This has placed Senate Democrats, who will next take up the measure, in a quandary. They are compelled to fix the alternative minimum tax (AMT), which hurts big swaths of the middle class even though it was created to ensure that the very rich could not entirely escape paying income tax. But in doing so, the Democrats might have to raise taxes on a particularly lucrative donor base...

While browsing YouTube, Alison H. Rich ’09 stumbled upon a video of a University of Michigan student performing a song entitled “Blue Hair.” Struck by the song’s unconventional yet identifiable character, Rich immediately tried to contact its writer, Joe Iconis, in order to get a copy of his sheet music. “I loved this song,” said Rich. “I Googled him and found his MySpace, and set up an account to message him.” To her surprise, Iconis...

Likewise, Mandy Moore is apt at playing the marginal role of the rich girl who is spoiled by her politician father, while Seann William Scott slips seamlessly into the role of the confused pawn. The special effects don’t go overboard, and the film has an excellent soundtrack, but it never develops any real moments of emotion. Granted, Kelly may be attempting...

...billion measure at issue, passed last week by the House of Representatives, is the latest one-year band-aid to fix the AMT. Created in 1969 to ensure that the rich would pay at least a minimum amount of tax annually, the AMT has ended up walloping an increasing share of the middle class. This year 21 million "ordinary" Americans will be hit by it if Congress doesn...
