But it first registered strongly on Washington's political Richter scale when he defended the right to burn the flag, while George Bush, also a war hero, was leading a posse of television camera crews to the Iwo Jima Memorial in Virginia, where he grandly condemned such acts. More recently, Kerrey has questioned the Persian Gulf deployment and flatly opposed a $20 billion arms sale to Saudi Arabia. Even before he first ran for office, Kerrey supported amnesty for Vietnam draft dodgers. These positions have not won much favor among generally conservative Nebraskans...

...same gold-painted sphere that was knocked wildly askew on Oct. 17, 1989, by the strongest earthquake to strike the city since 1906. ...Memphis State University. Fortunately, when the earthquakes of 1811 and 1812 occurred, the New Madrid region was too sparsely populated to suffer significant damage or injuries. A modern-day replay, however, would make the quake that shook San Francisco last year seem tame. That tremor measured 7.1 on the Richter scale. In contrast, the big quakes that rumbled forth from New Madrid may have exceeded 8.0, or about 10 times that strong...
