ITHACA, N.Y.—It’s a long ride from Cambridge to Ithaca, and for the Harvard football team the return trip must have seemed interminable. The No. 20 Crimson came to Cornell with the goal of rebounding from a loss last week to Lehigh that knocked it out of the ranks of the Division I-AA elite. Instead, Harvard (2-2, 1-1 Ivy) limped home with a 27-13 loss to the Big Red (2-2, 1-1) that raises serious questions about whether the Crimson can even compete with the best of the Ivy League...
Alan S. Manne ’43, a distinguished economist and world-renowned energy expert, died two weeks ago after suffering from cardiac arrest while engaging in one of his favorite pastimes, horseback riding. ...astronauts have been trained by NASA, and five of them have flown space-shuttle missions (including the flight of Discovery in August that marked the first shuttle mission since Columbia disintegrated upon reentry in 2003). In a gigantic clean room the size of a warehouse, Hasegawa oversees the assembly of the $3.25 billion Japanese Experiment Module (JEM), Japan's contribution to the International Space Station...
...single test ride certainly can't answer the lingering questions that Mercedes fans have raised about quality over the past couple of years, but you do get a glimpse of what the issues have been. There are motorized controls for everything short of the seat belt. Instructions for operating the seats run a dozen or so pages in the manual. Mercedes has put the gearshift back on the column to create more console space. It's an almost quaint touch, but you aren't shifting anything: the shifter is merely a lever that signals some other mechanical minion...
Chugging two-thirds of Allied Domecq (Fortune Brands downed the rest, for $5 billion) will add 65% more to Pernod Ricard's global revenues, reaching about $7 billion in 2004 sales. Says Bord: "Premium is growing in all categories" --one reason Pernod Ricard decided to ride the industry's wave of consolidation and, in the process, doubled its U.S. sales. Pernod thinks it can lift sales growth of the acquired brands--including Malibu, Kahlua, Ballantine's and Beefeater--from 3% to match the 9% rate Pernod is getting out of the rest of its portfolio...
