...seems almost incestuous because of the vested interests of the media. The press should be so diligent on other issues of equal import. Yet, the media's persistence in challenging the Nixonian ill-regard for the First Amendment grows out of an endemic responsibility to safeguard the public. Self-righteous as it sometimes appears, this feeling is deep-seated throughout the print and broadcast industry. Examples have been abundant of late. Half a dozen newsmen have chosen to go to jail rather than violate confidential relationships with sources; commentators and columnists of all political persuasions have lambasted grand jury pressure...
True, one may suspect that it is unjust for Calley to be the only man imprisoned for the My Lai affair. True, one may wish that clemency eventually be shown to the draft evaders. One may wish, in addition, that both the righteous right and the righteous left soften their positions. Yet the Coffin proposal smacks as much of an ill-considered trade-off as it does of Christian forgiveness. The two situations are really unrelated, both legally and morally. Each therefore deserves to be judged on its own merits, not as part of a jubilee...
...opposition Kelman's elders have seemingly abandoned. Because the Communist enemy is so evil for Kelman, it follows that America must be virtuous, in small ways as well as substantial ones. Witness: Kelman enters an East German supermart and the place looks dull. "I longed for something all my righteous ideas taught me to believe was worthless or even insidious--bright American packages," he laments...

Any self-respecting public relations man can do that. We are committed, and I do not say this in a self-righteous tone, to seeking and publishing the truth, whether that truth is pleasing or not. We have an obligation to our readers to report things as we see them, to probe problems and inquire into the background of those problems...
Soldier is the fascinating tale of Herbert's fall from grace. In a larger sense, it is also a study of the Army in decline. At times, because it carries the entire weight of Herbert's obviously one-sided case against his superiors, the account seems self-righteous. Indeed, the Army has done its best to discredit Herbert, accusing him of creating "fiction," insubordination and poor leadership. But whatever weaknesses Herbert's case against his two immediate superior officers may contain, the evidence he presents against the Army's conduct as such is overwhelming, triangulated...
