...most Latin American nations, the military is rightist-forming an elite of its own, or serving as mercenaries ready to protect the ruling oligarchy. Venezuela is a more complex case. The country is deeply troubled despite the wealth that gushes from its U.S.-run oil wells and despite a reform-minded government run by President Romulo Betancourt, 54, a onetime far leftist who has turned to the democratic center. Some of Betancourt's angriest opposition comes from the Communists and far left that he long ago abandoned, and there are powerful leftist elements within the armed forces. His support...

...confused with other house organs, the Black Book is a case study of a rightist movement among the inhabitants of the Okeefenokee swamp. It presents shocking and no doubt suppressed information about the threats boring the Republic from within, all the clear and present dangers in our midst and on our doorsteps. A series of memorable characters and vignettes warn us that there is little time left; we are on the brink, and there is much loin girding, belt tightening, and upper lip stiffening to be done. Maybe a little flag waving and God snatching...

...Nixon's opponents in the primary will be an extreme rightist (though not a Birch member) named Joseph C. Shell, now a Los Angeles Assemblyman. Shell is far from the stereotype of rabid radical--he is an attractive ex-fullback at U.S.C., still young, still blond--and he is well-financed since he married an oilman's daughter...

...Republicans received two portfolios, including the important Ministry of the Budget, which is responsible for long-range economic planning. To balance the shift leftward in domestic affairs, Fanfani kept on notable Christian Democrats in sensitive external affairs posts-moderate Foreign Minister Antonio Segni, a strong Common Market supporter, and rightist Defense Minister Giulio Andreotti, who is pro-NATO. The Nenni Socialists got no Cabinet jobs, but agreed to vote in parliament for government proposals they approve, abstain on proposals they dislike. With Nenni Socialist backing, Fanfani's new regime could count on 386 out of 595 voting members...

...Observer has no more formidable competitors than World, it will have only itself to blame if it fails. World is the brainchild of Ralph de Toledano, a militant rightist. In each weekly issue, the left-hand pages are devoted to government news, those on the right (naturally) to private news. All pages are equally badly dummied, and most of the news is badly presented and of little consequence. Stories range from the "World Roundup," which in a recent number was entitled, "Unrest, Gloom Persist in Most Global Hotspots," to the minutiae of "This Spinning World." One "Spinning World" item...
