...acrid, violent, percussive work, the concerto utilizes eerie chord clusters and precisely graduated effects of drums and cymbals ("Hit the snare at the rim and move gradually in towards the center," says the score at one point) to produce sounds as weird as anything in the world of electronic music. The first movement in last week's performance built to a climax with express-train power. The quieter second movement gained its effect from the almost somnolent alternation of the piano's sinuous theme with the whisper of a drum, the rasp of a snare, the tinkle...

...success story in Canada this year is the tale of the 120-mile rim of rolling land that hugs the western shore of Lake Ontario from Oshawa to Niagara Falls. One out of every seven Canadians now lives there. ...Chicago suburb of Markham looks like any of the thousands of bedroom communities that rim the cities of the nation: its lawns are well trimmed, its homes are split level or ranch, its streets neat and winding. To the 40O-home subdivision of Park Terrace in Markham last week drove a young, house-hunting couple. They cruised for a while, stopped off at the sales office, asked Sales Manager Milton Lewis to take them through the model homes. "Certainly," said Lewis. ...hour of 2 p.m. universal time* approached, Venus looked like a yellow half-moon against the sky background, and Regulus, greenish in hue, was approaching the rim of its disk. The occultation was to start at 2:21. The minutes passed; the star edged closer to the invisible rim of the planet. "No change, no change," chanted Hynek into a tape recorder while an assistant read off the time. "Gosh, there-it seemed to go. It's definitely going, going. It's gone." Eleven minutes and 4.8 seconds later, Regulus reappeared from behind the bright edge of Venus...

Saunders-Roe's Hovercraft has a 30-ft. oval hull like an inverted platter. Sticking up from the center is a cylindrical housing for a 435-h.p. engine and a four-bladed fan. Air from the fan is blown down through two ring-shaped ducts under the rim of the hull, and emerges in jets that point inward, forming a kind of wall. Inside this wall a cushion of air builds up and lifts the Hovercraft off the surface. Forward propulsion is obtained by diverting part of the air flow through horizontal ducts (see diagram...
