...Windows Mobile devices. Within these categories there are a few different flavors of connectivity, too. The PalmOne Treo 650 (reviewed in another incarnation several months ago) has both Bluetooth and a basic data connection, as well as a voice line (you remember those, right?). Ditto for Verizon's newest RIM BlackBerry, the 7250. And there are variations on the Windows Mobile theme: the UTStarcomm/Audiovox XV6600 with Bluetooth and a connection to Verizon's super-fast EVDO data network (known as BroadbandAccess), and the all-new Samsung i730, which takes all of that and adds a Wi-Fi connection...

...young protagonist of The Coffin on the Hill climbs aboard a houseboat on the Yangtze River (Welch was born in Shanghai, where his father was a partner in a firm that managed rubber plantations): "Leaning forward and putting out my tongue I licked the brass rim of one of the portholes, in order to realize the ship with all my senses. Citing evidence from bore samples taken in southern Florida, Petuch says that, after impact, coral began to grow on the raised rim of the crater, forming a circular atoll-like formation. Later, when the sea level rose, the atoll gradually elongated into an ellipse as the coral (which seeks warm waters) migrated toward the shallows north of the original crater. Some 1.8 million years ago, the atoll contained an inland sea continually replenished by ocean waters. But as the rising coral walls gradually closed out the ocean, newly deposited sediments' piled up in the forming lagoon. The inland sea shrank...

Christopher Columbus took only 33 days to cross the Atlantic and discover the New World island he christened San Salvador in 1492. Yet he left no marker, and scholars have spent nearly 500 years since in debating the site. On the eastern rim of the Bahamas, Rum Cay, Grand Turk and Cat Island have been suggested. In 1942 Columbus Biographer Samuel Eliot Morison declared that the landfall was Watling Island, today's San Salvador...
