...Friends recommended the Sanctuary (thesanctuary-kpg.com), a health retreat nestled away on Haad Tien beach on the island of Koh Phangan in southern Thailand. The island is notorious for its full-moon parties, during which an international cast of backpackers mingle and dance on Haad Rin beach. They also ingest enough mind-altering chemicals to cause the nearest psychiatric hospital to double its staff on the big night. But a brief longtail-boat ride away from the lunacy, the Sanctuary offers a return to sanity and a healthier frame of mind...

...fact, the story goes that the Sanctuary owes its existence to the mentally imbalanced high jinks at Haad Rin. About a dozen years ago, a pair of ex-hausted British travelers fled the full-moon frenzy in a hired longtail. They landed on then-uninhabited Haad Tien beach, set up camp and were so charmed by the tranquility of the setting that they decided to make more-permanent arrangements. Return to Central starts out promisingly. “What You’re Afraid Of” is one of those perfect pop songs, with swirling synths and surprisingly warm vocals from singer Manda Rin building anticipation before the guitar crunch and insanely catchy chorus bust everything up in a climax of euphoria. The raw immediacy of their past has been displaced by an apparent craving for a deeper sound—exemplified...

Wondering why you couldn't get tickets to The Vagina Monologues? Saturday's talented cast performed as part of the National V-Day College Initiative, which limited each campus to one performance, according to co-director Debby A. Rin '01. Since the show sold out before intersession, clearly there was demand for more, but a contract is a contract in show business. For those of us who planned ahead and braved the cold in formal wear, it was worth it; for everyone else, Rin suggests there is a local professional cast who can help your vagina know what to wear...

...something private with every other character. Though certain combinations of actors take longer than others to hit their stride, the relationships created are generally believable. The most central, and most engaging, relationship exists between the two sisters/mothers, played to a wonderful balance of kitsch and sincerity by Scardigli and Rin. The difficulties they have with each other, one the provider and the other the dependent, are further complicated by the shared history with their parents and the individual need to raise their own children. As money becomes even more scarce, the long-repressed tension between them threatens to splinter...
