...film craftsmen, who rarely betray the slightest knowledge of their medium's past and who have in the last year or so trashed all kinds of potentially interesting material (Gable and Lombard, W.C. Fields, the early screen cowboys in Hearts of the West, not to mention the hapless Rin Tin Tin) while seeking a market in movie nostalgia that has so far been more apparent than real...
Blood, the dog, is no Rin Tin Tin. He curses like a trooper, puns, philosophizes, teaches, and even conjugates Latin verbs. In print, Ellison creates the character intelligently enough that the reader comes to believe, empathise and imagine him. But on the screen it doesn't work. The camera strips away that imaginative process and instead offers a voice-over for Blood's thoughts, making him sound like a disembodied canine version of Mr. Ed, spouting bits of arcane knowledge. But his own paintings were much less formalized than Kōrin's. Hōitsu was an exquisite observer of small events: a patch of lichen on the pale bark of a branch, rendered with a diffused blot of malachite green...
...including the Hitchcock film. He can be seen currently as Big Bob Freedlander, the Jaycee mobile-home salesman in Smile, a comedy manqué about a teen-age beauty contest. Next month, he starts work on Won Ton Ton, a farce about the 1920's legendary wonder dog, Rin Tin Tin, in which he plays an old-line Hollywood director. But keeping busy is not the only answer. Says Agent Freddie Fields: "Bruce needs to make love to a woman on the screen." In his 19-year career, Bruce has only kissed a woman once. She was Karen Black...
