When Russian Cipher Clerk Igor Gouzenko defected from the Soviet embassy in Ottawa in 1945 with documents exposing a Soviet spy ring, he had considerable trouble finding anyone in Ottawa to defect to. He called fruitlessly at the Justice Minister's office, vainly told his story to the Ottawa Journal, was finally taken in tow by the Ottawa police only after embassy goons broke into his apartment. Last week, in a sadly wiser world, Dr. Mikhail Antonovich Klotchko, 59, a leading Soviet inorganic chemist, in Canada to attend the 18th International Congress of Theoretical and Applied Chemistry...
Died. Harry Balogh, 70, boxing's "Marquis of Malaprop," whose bullhorn ring announcements rattled U.S. stadiums for some 35 purple years; following surgery; in Manhattan. A onetime bellhop from the Lower East Side, Balogh brought "class" to his profession by introducing the soup-and-fish and the comparative adjective (his variation on the ungrammatical "best-man-win" theme: "May the better participant emerge triumphant"), in 1935 capped a lifelong battle against race hate by imploring an inflamed crowd at the Primo Carnera-Joe Louis bout: "Leave us all view this contest without anchor or prejudism...

Among the overflow crowd of 1,600 at the open-air pavilion moved white-jacketed "spotters," alert for the telltale gestures-a casual nod, a lifted finger-that signifies a bid. The first horse went quickly. "Sold for $30,000," boomed Auctioneer Milton Dance Jr., rapping his gavel for emphasis. By the time Auctioneer Dance's gavel had fallen for the 48th and last time. $319,500 worth of horseflesh-all paid for in cash-had changed hands...

...American Visitor is something of a misnomer as a title. Marie is interesting only as an American abstraction, a believer in the view that what is savage is unspoiled. What is best in the book is its ring of truth. The natives and the British whites speak and act with absolute naturalness. Gary describes the Nigerian landscape, soldiers on the march, and a tribal attack with casual excellence. And he misses few of the ironies of a situation in which imperfect Christians try to perfect the savages...
