...after the cities have been cleaned out, the mini-series mutates into a more tepid apocalyptic soap opera. The narrative coalesces around a few disparate survivors (who have an unexplained immunity to the flu), among them an easygoing Texan (Gary Sinise), a pregnant young woman from Maine (Molly Ringwald), a rock singer (Adam Storke) and an angelic deaf-mute (Rob Lowe). The few people left are mystically drawn into two camps: one led by a messiah- like black woman (Ruby Dee), the other by a satanic "dark man" (a leonine Jamey Sheridan...
...peers and his sincerity and sagacity keep the movie from becoming a complete self-parody. Slater delivers his lines with the mixture of childlike sincerity and budding adult wisdom that is required of this most intelligent teen. Mathis, on the other hand, acts like a cross between Molly Ringwald and Wynona Ryder (believe me, two wrongs never make a right). Her precocious writing ability, combined with her overzealous real-life libido and change-the-world enthusiasm, make her more annoying than inspirational. In the giddy days of bathtub gin -- much guzzling in all three stories, by the way -- the coitus of an aging rake (Peter Weller) and a nubile flapper is rendered interruptus by untimely calls from his other women. Former teen queen Molly Ringwald delivers her lioness's share of the Parker sallies with engaging zest but seems a bit too twentysomethingly modern for a tart of the Roaring Twenties...
When Betsy (brat-pack actress Molly Ringwald) announces her marriage plans, Hopper decides he is going to throw the biggest, most amazing wedding the whole damned world has ever seen. His decision is cemented when his pride is wounded by his in-laws-to-be. Betsy's fiance Jake comes from a wealthy family from the East Side of Manhattan. His family is in investment banking--they buy and sell companies, Betsy explains to her chubby Italian aunt--and offer to pay for the whole soiree in high style. ("At the Plaza Hotel, maybe?" they suggest.) Hopper, at the suggestion...
...Ringwald alone does not not impress. She has yet to go beyond the formula she found in the beginning of her career. She whines, she pouts, she looks tremulous and annoys. She--again--wears wacky clothes. The only thing that has changed is the color of her famous mop--it has gotten progressively more orange and progressively less flattering. Ringwald would be better off spending less time at the hairdresser and more time enrolled in a decent acting class...
