...three largest markets made it to the World Series. Yes, the national TV fee will drop next year, but the last contract was, for CBS and ESPN, ruinously high. Yes, some players' salaries are too fat, but no one forced the Baltimore Orioles to pay Cal Ripken $30.5 million for the next five years. For these woes, the owners have only themselves to blame. Which doesn't mean they can't blame somebody else. Somebody who could be requested to resign...

What happens when a worker blames worries about his salary for a faltering job performance? In baseball, he wins a record payoff. Admittedly distracted by negotiations for a new contract, shortstop Cal Ripken Jr. is hitting more than 70 points below his 1991 average of .323. Still, he is a fan idol whom the Baltimore Orioles dared not let go. Last week they signed Ripken to play five more years for an average $6.1 million per. ...MOST CITIES, people go to baseball games to see power, not precision. It wasn't exciting to watch shortstop Cal Ripken, Jr. earn a record .996 fielding percentage with only three errors in 1990. Nope. Not exciting. But watching Ripken and the Orioles play all season can be downright poetic. Scoff, cite statistics about "better" teams until you're blue in the face. You're probably right. Baltimore's record in recent years has been dismal...

...Saturday's game, I was greeted with the words, "Welcome to your new home. Please be very careful. Balls and bats may come your way so be alert at all times. Thank you." I was alert. Bill Ripken sang along with the P.A. before the game and I smirked. Home...
