...Campbell, born in Scotland, lately transplanted to Australia, earned his reputation among the comixcenti in the late 1980s for his semi-autobiographical works (collected last year as "Alec: The King Canute Crowd"). His mainstream success came when he drew "From Hell," the twelve part Jack-the-Ripper series by "superstar" comix-writer Alan Moore, the movie of which stars Johnny Depp and has a September release date...
...adventures for all. Walks operate at all hours, without reservations--or regard to weather. A good beginning might be a stroll through the old central city, home of the Tower of London. Move on to historic Chelsea and Greenwich, explore literary Bloomsbury, then follow the footsteps of Jack the Ripper with a leading crime historian. ...film rests on the shoulders and taut torso of Bale, who as a child starred in Steven Spielberg's Empire of the Sun and played Jesus in a recent TV movie. His Patrick is stylish and creepy--Jack the Ripper in an Armani outfit. Bale's dishy anonymity (he stares at himself and says, "I simply am not there") makes him the ideal black hole at the center of this movie. It needs to be seen and appreciated, like a serpent in a glass cage...
