...ITALIAN COMMUNISM. International Communism presents a varied panorama. Within this panorama is the Italian Communist Party with its particular traditions and its original traits. We have always assumed the best democratic and patriotic traditions of the country, going back to the Risorgimento. Our party has fought to guarantee all fundamental freedoms, including freedom of assembly and speech, within a more progressive social and economic framework. We have never believed, even in 1945, that one single party-or single class-can solve the problems of our country...

...chief curiosity in the current Stratford version is director Michael Kahn's decision to relocate the play in 1866. Personally I'd prefer a Rinascimento Romeo to a Risorgimento one. ...Englishman who met Casement in Chicago, during an American tour to raise funds against Britain described him as "a fanatic of the type of Mazzini ... great in the beginning of Italy's risorgimento, and so greatly mistaken in the end." His Irish American host in New York said flatly that Sir Roger had become "mentally unbalanced." Cracked or not, Casement was confident that a victorious Germany would benignly liberate Ireland. He made his way to Berlin, where he soon found that the German government consisted of "swine and cads." His attempt to recruit Irish soldiers captured by the Germans...

...candidate, it cannot hope to carry the South unless its nominee is sufficiently conservative to neutralize Wallace's appeal. Former Vice President Richard Nixon has a considerable Southern following, but Ronald Reagan is probably the only Republican capable of consolidating his party's arduous-and still tenuous-risorgimento in Dixie...
