They are off. Not out of their minds exactly but driven, obsessed. There are at least 25 million of them right now, mostly prosperous Western Europeans, huddled like refugees on the packed fringes of the Mediterranean. They are taking part in a ritual, exercising a civil right, and in the process hungrily consummating a winter's yearnings. The summer vacation season is upon them, draining the gray, rainy cities of the north, flooding the beaches of Spain's Costa del Sol, France's Côte d'Azur, Italy's Capri and the Greek islands...

...brightens California's San Jose market, one of the biggest in the U.S., with its 130 acres attracting 2.5 million visitors annually. Crowds pushing shopping carts stroll through the grounds, consuming heroic quantities of junk food and observing the outlandish garb that customers wear as part of the ritual. Henry Cortez, a robust Mexican American, sports a huge straw hat and tows Grandson Douglas around in a wooden wagon. "This is my flea-market hat," says Cortez, who has been going to the San Jose market almost every weekend since 1960. "And this is my flea-market wagon...

In the Church of Satan, worship equipment includes candles, a bell, a chalice, elixir, a sword, a gong, parchment and "a model phallus." (Not that Army chaplains are likely to have to supply them, since ritual secrecy is also part of Satanism.) There is also the Native American Church, an Indian group that has won court approval to get high on peyote during weekly or monthly rituals that run all night. The Army does not state whether the peyote rites must end in time for reveille...

...dark everyone goes outside, where a 25-ft. cross swathed in kerosene-soaked rags stands in a field. Rifle-toting Klansmen guard the perimeter. The others button up the face panels on their hoods. Wilkinson rehearses them, but they are awkward at the ritual. As they wave their arms, they look a bit like high school cheerleaders learning a pom-pom routine. Some cannot see too well through those eyeholes. Slowly they circle the cross, throwing torches at its foot. The flames race upward, and all salute by raising both arms, as if crucified...
