...railroad link over the Yangtze River between North and South China-is a national shrine and a political rallying point for the Maoist line. It is storied in song and film and pictured on thermos flasks, postcards, beer bottles, matchboxes and cake cartons. On either side, the approach roadway is two miles long; at each end of the span rise two 70-ft. rose-colored towers. An exhibition hall in one of the bridge towers features a 20-ft. white statue of Mao; his poems are engraved in marble on the walls. The atmosphere is that of a cathedral...
...millenniums, they may be puzzled by some of the fossils they find along a 1.68-mile stretch of Jefferson Boulevard. For there, in a gesture of economy and perhaps utility, Los Angeles County has installed 900 plastic peperomias, pit-tosporums and ti palms, among other flora, to decorate the roadway...
...eight towns, 59 rural districts and 27 farms. Some bits of land were separated from the city, but came under its jurisdiction anyway. The shoulderless roadway is so narrow that no gas or electric lines can be installed: though it is the coldest part of the city, petroleum for both light and heat must be trucked in. Nonresidents must travel the dirt road under British escort, because Vopos lurk just off the roadway in case anybody...
Boeing lost little time in starting toward that goal. In August the company was named manager of a Transportation Department-sponsored project that will provide rapid transit along a 3.5-mile stretch of traffic-clogged roadway in Morgantown, W. Va., connecting the three campuses of West Virginia University and the downtown area. Boeing and subcontractors will build the track line and about 85 electrically powered, computer-operated cars. Commuters will be able to signal the vehicles, which carry 17 passengers and run at speeds up to 30 m.p.h., to stop by pushing buttons located inside the cars and at each...
