...staff members constantly roam the globe, visiting countries and meeting with finance ministers and central-bank governors. "This is not ivory-tower analysis," says Shailendra Anjaria, director of the external-relations department at the IMF. "This is get-your-feet-wet, on-the-scene inspection." Because the IMF releases its funds in periodic amounts, it has a lever to keep countries in line. Says Deputy Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers: "It's very important that we put out fires without giving people an incentive to leave matches around the next time...

...Away, The Devil's Own), The Jackal has a special place in its heart for IRA terrorists. Such comprehensive forgiveness normally isn't extended to others who live on the moral margins, such as Islamic terrorists or Louise Woodward; but it allows Gere's Mulqueen, a convicted killer, to roam around unmanacled and largely unsupervised. The script strains to pardon Mulqueen's crimes by contrasting his noble, ideological struggle with the Jackal's vicious, gun-for-hire mentality, but both characters are so poorly developed that it's hard to care. Where's Jane Fonda? I occasionally wonder as I consider taping over my Prime Time Workout cassette to record ER. She's been basking happily the past six years in the shadow of her mogul husband Ted Turner (vice chairman of Time Warner), watching the buffalo roam and writing a cookbook (perhaps the only one with a section on eating disorders). ...dual tragedy in Jackson Township, a New York City suburb of 36,000, cut to parents' worst fears about how much freedom they can really afford children to roam sidewalks or cyberspace. Community members and the local press were quick to ascribe larger blame for the horrid crime. Shouldn't the unregulated Internet be made accountable? Or the depressing lyrics of the rock songs Sam Manzie loved? Or the Christa McAuliffe Middle School for allowing students to solicit door to door...

...Edge, from a screenplay by David Mamet... Oh, excuse us while we ask, "Huh?" The Ubermensch of Urban Menace with a wilderness script? Mr. American Buffalo out where the, well, elk roam? Yes, and this is genuine Mametiana: a two-character piece with threats crowding in from the elements (vast space, cold weather, an angry bear) and from a man's bitter, murky soul. It doesn't have much of the Mamet dialogue tang; that is on dazzling display in his forthcoming thriller, The Spanish Prisoner. Still, The Edge, directed by Lee Tamahori, offers enough of what a melodrama demands...
