Sophomore Rob Newell was the third Harvard athlete to claim two individual events on the day, bringing home the gold in the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke. Newell finished the 100-yard race in 51.62 and posted a 1:51.04 finish for the 200-yard backstroke...
...movie, is gaining momentum at just the right time. Fading fast is another, much more expensive musical. Nine, which was eligible for five Globes and won none, is the season's biggest box-office disappointment: just $18.1 million on an $80 million budget. At this rate, Rob Marshall's star-clogged downer won't even earn as much as a modest CGI sci-fi feature released early this fall: 9 will outgross Nine. Find a role for Sophia Loren! Cast Kidman as an amalgam of Claudia Cardinale and Anita Ekberg! And, just as anachronistic, have people sing their troubles...
...late October, the Mondragon Corp. and the million-plus-member United Steelworkers (USW) union announced an alliance to develop Mondragon-type manufacturing cooperatives in the U.S. and Canada. Says USW's Rob Witherell: "Initially we are looking to convert an existing manufacturing operation." As for financing new ventures, he adds, "There's a significant amount of infrastructure already in place in the U.S. to assist in the development of cooperatives, such as the National Cooperative Bank and the National Cooperative Business Association. It's possible the NCB could function in a Caja Laboral ... role for us here...
